The Giant Turnip starts when Grandad suggests a group of bored friends grow vegetables in the summer holidays. He offers a prize for the biggest vegetable, and the children rush to dig the soil and plant their gardens. But one of the friends visits the library to find a book on growing vegetables, and finds instead a book of magic spells which takes on an exciting twist.

They follow the magic spell for growing a giant turnip, and the next morning the garden is almost filled with the biggest turnip anyone has ever seen! It takes a crane and a digger, all the children, Grandpa, a police helicopter and even the dog and cat all working together to pull the giant turnip up. And then what are they going to do with all that yummy turnip?
